200 megapixel camera debuts in GALAXY Z fold7

Samsung Electronics introduces the Galaxy Z Fold7, its thinnest and lightest foldable smartphone yet, equipped with 200 megapixel wide-angle camera. Announced during the Samsung Unpacked conference on July 9th, 2025, the company showcases the dubbed high-resolution camera with AI-enhanced imaging that automatically edits the lighting, detail, and realism of the photos and videos so they can stay sharp and vivid, even in low-light settings. Aside from the debut of the 200 megapixel wide-angle camera, there’s also a 10 megapixel 100-degree camera on the main display for group selfies. Several camera settings help improve the look of the images and videos.

Samsung says that for its thinnest foldable smartphone, the upgraded ProVisual Engine can process images faster so they save immediately in a single click and keep their crispness and detail. There’s also a Night Video, which comes with intelligent motion detection to separate moving subjects from still backgrounds and reduce noise in movements. For additional color depth, the 10-bit HDR can result in videos and photos with richer color, deeper contrast, and lifelike detail, ‘no matter the time of day,’ the company adds.

Unveiling Samsung’s thinnest foldable smartphone

Samsung’s thinnest foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold7, weighs only 215 grams, which is even lighter than Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra. When the phone is folded, it is 8.9 mm thick, and when unfolded, it becomes only 4.2 mm thick. On the outside, the device has a 6.5-inch screen, which is wider than the last model and uses a 21:9 aspect ratio, meaning the screen is easier to read, type on, and scroll through. It is also good for one-hand use, just like a normal phone. When users unfold Samsung’s thinnest foldable smartphone yet, the Galaxy Z Fold7 looks like a small tablet. The main screen is 8 inches wide, and it is 11 percent larger than the screen on the older version.

The screen uses a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, showing deep black colors and bright, vivid details, and this screen also uses Vision Booster, and its brightness can go up to 2,600 nits to make it easier for the users to see the display during the day. Because of its large screen, the Galaxy Z Fold7 can double as a portable workspace, which is also ideal for multitasking. Users can open several apps at once, copy and paste between them, or drag files across the screen. In the same conference, the company also unveils the pocket-sized Z Flip7, with a 9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. It is also the company’s slimmest Galaxy Z Flip yet, measuring only 13.7mm when folded. Samsung’s thinnest foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold7, as well as the Galaxy Z Flip7 are available from July 25th, 2025.

LED display that projects moving images behind device

The Picdance iPhone case has an LED screen at the back so users can project pixelated animations and moving images on it. A collaboration between Kiwidesign and Picdance, the case is only 3.6 millimeters thick, including the screen that can show pictures, lights, and even music. iPhone users can change the image on the back, make their own pixelated pictures, and even see the lights get animated to the beat of the song their phone is playing.

They can also set up their custom button for apps like camera, flashlight, or wallet. When they get call and message alerts, the Picdance iPhone case with screen flashes the icon of the app being used during that call or message, still in their pixel forms. Adding a moving and customizable display at the back is a way for the design team to let the users change the case’s style without needing to replace their entire cover.

Picdance iphone case with screen has hotkey

There’s a dedicated app for the Picdance iPhone case with a rear screen where the users can design their own pixel images, share them, and download others. It doubles as a creative community, like a social platform, where people can talk, share, and generate new ideas. Users can upload their own photos or choose one from their iPhone’s album, and the app will turn and flash it behind into a pixel-style icon.

The Picdance iPhone case with a rear screen comes with an orange button on the side, and the users can program this for a specific function, including opening the camera and turning on the flashlight. The cover also features a microphone, and this is where the music light mode comes in: the case listens to the external playing, and the LED screen lights move with the rhythm. The Picdance iPhone case with a rear screen is made of tempered glass, diffusion film, LED lights, and a heat-resistant glue, and so far, the cover is only available for iPhone 15 users.

Changeable backplates for modular Fairphone Gen 6

The modular Fairphone Gen 6 comes with changeable backplates so users can replace the rear with a card holder, lanyard, finger loop, and protective case. Dubbed integrated accessories, the device’s owners unscrew the two tiny bolts at the back of the modular Fairphone Gen 6 and screw on the chosen backplate, like the one with a card holder. Aside from the backplates, the other components of the device are modular, too.

A feature that the brand highlights is that nothing is glued shut inside the casing, so users can swap any of the twelve modular parts in minutes and ‘keep it going for years,’ the brand adds. This means that the device is repairable, which is unlike the modern phones where some parts, like the battery, are glued into the phone. With the modular Fairphone Gen 6, the battery pops out when pulled, bringing back the days of the removable cells.

Repairable Parts made of recycled and fair materials

Aside from the built-in storage, the modular Fairphone Gen 6 comes with a memory card slot at the bottom of the device, so users can expand the storage to up to 2 terabytes. The brand adds that in terms of materials, they’ve used more than 50 percent fair and recycled materials, which include aluminum, copper, steel, tin, indium, magnesium, nickel, plastics, rare earths, zinc, fair trade gold, fairmined silver, cobalt, and tungsten. The design is also minimalist, with the rear part having just a solid color and the cameras being embedded into the device to have almost no bumps at the back, unlike the bulgy ones found in modern smartphones.

Speaking of minimalist, the modular Fairphone Gen 6 has a lime-colored switch on the side of the device that, once the users clicks it, the smartphone’s screen only show the essential apps in monochromatic display. In this mode, the owners can only use five apps of their choice in hopes of reducing their screen time. The brand also says that the body of the device uses a recycled matte composite body, while the screen adopts Gorilla Glass 7i. The smartphone has an IP55 rating against heavy rain and has been subjected to military-grade drop testing to make sure it is robust. So far, the modular Fairphone Gen 6 is available, but the changeable backplates are sold separately.

Detox from digital screens with a slab of methaphone

The transparent methaphone wants users to detox from digital screens using cut acrylic in the size of an iPhone 15. A sculptural and phone-like object, the plastic-made item adjusts to any environment and light instantly because of its translucency. It’s dark when the room is dark, and it’s visible when the surroundings are light-filled. The object is a collaboration between Eric Antonow and engineer-artist Greg Hochmuth, who say that the methaphone that helps people detox from digital screens even runs on the ‘Eternally Unbothered OS.’

The duo chooses green edge acrylic for the electric-less device to produce the appearance of glass without the risk of breaking. They also craft it to ¼ thickness to make it resemble the modern smartphones’ width. So far, the design team adds that, just like any other smartphone, there’s a breaking and scratching limit to this methaphone that helps people detox from digital screens when dropped and scraped. In general, it mimics a fidget toy because it’s a way to reduce the screen time of the users while giving them an object shaped familiarly in their hands.

Neon-color versions of acrylic-made device

The design team derives the word ‘methaphone’ from methadone, which is a synthetic analgesic drug similar to morphine. They say that heroin addicts have used methadone to help break their addiction. ‘Now you can step down your dependency on your mobile device with this,’ add Eric Antonow and Greg Hochmuth. The slab of acrylic that can help people detox from digital screens went through prototyping and conception within four weeks, from conceptual sketches to physical pieces: Eric Antonow sketched the idea, and Grex Hochmuth quickly fabricated different colors of acrylic prototypes. By March 30, prototypes were in hand, and the shipping began the week after.

In the now-finished campaign, the design team planned to build 80 methaphones for the first batch to allow themselves to solve the manufacturing details and have them ship the device to the backers without issues. On the page, they’ve also shared that they’d create a few limited editions of the device that can help users detox from digital screens in neon versions. The delivery of the first batch may have been successful because the design team posted a photo with neon-colored methaphones on the X account of the device back on June 13th, 2025. While the methaphones that help users detox from digital screens are sold out, the team says they’re making more.

ASMR device ‘muto’ locks smartphones during digital detox

Designer Seojin Lee creates muto, a concept ASMR home device that locks smartphones for a digital detox. Users first download the dedicated app to set the timer. Then, they place their smartphones into muto’s holder. Once they’re ready to let go of their artificial screens and enter into a digital detox, the machine locks the smartphone until the set time is up. While they can’t use their personal device, users can switch on the other features of muto.

These include the ASMR audio recordings and white noise coming from the gadget’s built-in speaker on the right side. Here, too, users can find the mouse, which doubles as a fidget module and volume control for the audio. Placed on the exterior of the muto is a screen that shows how much time there is before the digital detox ends. There’s even a ring animation that trickles down clockwise around the time to let users know when the digital detox is finishing.

Interrupting the phone-free time is possible

Before settling on a phone-holder-styled device with a built-in speaker and mouse, Seojin Lee has designed other iterations for muto. Most of them involve transparent but locked containers. While the users can’t access their smartphones during the digital detox, they can still see their device, or even the screens as the notifications flood in. This makes stepping away from the smartphones a bit harder than the designer wants.

Because of this, she decides to enclose the phones in a holder with only a small screen to flash the time and an animated ring for the duration left. Just because the smartphones are locked into muto doesn’t mean users can’t access them in emergency times. They can interrupt the digital detox. They should set up the setting on the app before they plug their phones into the holder, so muto knows if it’s an emergency. There’s an ‘unlock’ button next to the white noise and timer controls on the surface of the ASMR device. Here, the users can pop their phones back to their hands, but the designer says only if they need to. So far, the device for digital detox is still a concept project.

Point-and-shoot film camera for Light Phone III

Light Phone III features a point-and-shoot film camera and a tactile, clickable wheel to turn on the flashlight. A smartphone for digital detox, the touchscreen device has a large matte OLED display and a custom LightOS system, which makes it have a black and white interface. Its screen is similar to an e-ink display, only monochrome and digital still. The Light Phone III, the recent sibling of its first model, adds a USB-C port, fingerprint ID, a flashlight, a 5G connection, an NFC chip, and a clickable wheel for the torch to the touchscreen device.

Then, there’s the point-and-shoot film camera next to the torch at the back of the Light Phone III. Unlike the cameras in the past, the one in the modern device has a dedicated two-step shutter button with center focus and a fixed focal length. To adjust the focus, users just half-press the button. When they want to take the photo or record a video, they fully press it. The default image output is 12 megapixels (or 4,000px x 3,000px), from a 50-megapixel rear sensor. For selfie fans, there’s also an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.

clickable wheel to increase and decrease screen brightness

Next to the film camera button of the Light Phone III is the clickable wheel, also used to increase and decrease the screen’s brightness. In a way, it doubles as a fidget toy when the users lock the smartphone. Another design feature of the device is its metal frame. The design team says they want the users to use the device for as long as they can, not just after a year or so. Owners then can unscrew the unit and replace the battery, as well as repair the screen and USB port. For the battery cover and speaker grill, the team uses Sony SORPLAS recycled plastic.

Speaking of the speaker grill on the Light Phone III, it’s at the bottom of the device, visible to allow for better acoustics. There some smartphone features that remain available in the Light Phone III with a film camera. It has GPS, Bluetooth, finger print ID, a noise-canceling microphone, supports voice-to-text, and can be used as a personal hotspot. But some modern features are not present. For example, there’s currently no music streaming app like Spotify. It’s not possible yet to call and message people with platforms like Whatsapp and Signal. Taxi apps aren’t available, either. ‘These features may be possible in future software updates,’ the design team says.

light phone film camera
Light Phone III features a point-and-shoot film camera

USB-C port for wired headphones

The Light Phone III team adds that it’s important to remember all of the features it will never have, such as social media, internet browsing, email, news, or ads. So far, the device with a film camera only supports an English keyboard and language. However, users can still view incoming messages in different languages and characters. At the present time, the team is looking into expanding the language support.

Specs-wise, the Light Phone III with a film camera is 5G ready. It has a 3.92-inch AMOLED display, and the screen uses matte glass. The memory supports 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. There are two microphones and two stereo speakers. So far, it doesn’t have any expandable memory or headphone jack. However, the USB-C port can be used for wired headphones. The shipping of the Light Phone III with a film camera begins in March 2025 for those who have placed their pre-orders. For the rest, they receive their unit from June 2025.

The modern bar and flip phones by Easco have swappable and customizable keypads that users easily switch. Users unclip these ‘keyboards’ using the small inlets at the bottom or pull them down from the main body of the modern flip and bar phones. Then, they can switch the keypads by popping them back into their positions after hearing the satisfying snap or sliding the new keypad back up for the bar models. Unveiled during MWC 2025, the Easco devices can come with the in-house-developed FindMy technology, depending on the model.

It tracks the modern flip and bar phones if the users lose them somewhere or forget where they’ve put them. For the features of the devices, there’s an 1.8-inch external display for the flip models to let users see notifications, time, and caller information without needing to open the gadget. Then, for all the models, the Easco phones have light strips that blink when the devices receive notifications. Users can even assign light patterns for different contacts or notifications so that they know who the calls or messages are coming from without opening the devices.

Easco adds front and rear cameras to its devices

More on the swappable and customizable keypads, Easco creates them so users can program keys for quick access to frequently used contacts and uses. Aside from the tactile keyboards, the brand adds cameras to these modern flip and bar phones, with an LED flash for the rear one. The design team also revives the 3.5mm headphone jack for the users who miss wired earphones, and there’s a Type-C 2.0 USB port for charging.

The small main display is a 2.8-inch TFT LCD screen, and these modern flip and bar phones have full 4G LTE connectivity with dual-SIM capability. There are different color combinations to choose from, including green, gold, yellow, and blue. Users can purchase additional swappable keypads if they wish, even if their colors don’t correspond to the model unit for a more playful gadget. Xiaomi smartphone turns into digital camera at MWC 2025

Xiaomi reveals its modular magnetic lens that turns smartphones into digital cameras during MWC 2025 in Barcelona. Dubbed the Xiaomi Mobile Optical System, the magnetic lens clips right in the middle of the smartphone’s rear, reminiscent of the digital camera back in the days. It features a regular double-Gauss lens as well as Light Fusion X with a custom M4/3 sensor. This means the design team reshapes the light paths of the sensor and finetunes the sensor so that the magnetic lens can capture images and record videos like a digital camera.

The company says the result presents sharp images and videos, even if the modular magnetic lens looks compact and pocket-sized. So far, Xiaomi says that the digital camera-like lens can offer 100 megapixel capacity to the smartphones, independent of the megapixels already offered by the phone cameras. It latches onto the rear of the device and is removable, so it’s not bulky when the user brings it in their pockets. At the moment, the company says that users just need to plug in the modular magnetic lens to start using it.

Modular magnetic lens that takes sharp images

For specs buffs, the Xiaomi modular magnetic lens for smartphones has lossless streams of RAW data transfer for images and videos captured by the digital camera-like lens. The company shares that users can transfer these files wirelessly to the Xiaomi AISP, which is dubbed the first AI LM computational photography platform. It’s because of this technology that the images and videos captured have 16 stops of dynamic range, making them clearer and sharper compared to those taken by a smartphone without the digital camera lens.

The company adds that users don’t need to pair or charge the device. It hasn’t explained yet how the device fully works on smartphones, whether there’ll be an app associated with it or the in-house system operates the accessory. Xiaomi also hints that the digital camera-like lens may only be adaptable to their series of smartphones. For this reason, there’s a magnetic slot at the rear of their smartphones, so the lens can clasp on it and users can start using their devices like a digital camera. So far, there’s no news yet on the production date of the smart accessory.

Portable and foldable smartphone by infinix

Infinix unveils the mini Zero smartphone, a card-sized foldable and portable device that clips on backpacks. Designed with a triple-folding mechanism, the concept device comes with dual hinges that let the smartphone fold and unfold itself vertically instead of horizontally. Ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, the style follows in the footsteps of the now-expanding series of foldable and portable smartphones these days. Some of these recent models include the Huawei Mate XT and OPPO Find N5.

This time around, Infinix’s Zero smartphone folds vertically. When closed, users can mount the foldable and portable device onto gym and bike equipment so they can track their workout, or clip them onto their backpacks for some action reels and shots. The dual hinges allow them to play with the style of the concept smartphone, depending on how they need it. So far, the project is still a concept, and Infinix has yet to announce whether it’s gearing up to produce the foldable and portable smartphone into a real-life device.

Concept device that comes with a ‘mounting’ strap

What Infinix can share presently is that the Zero foldable and portable smartphone can stand upright for hands-free calls and movie streaming. It comes with a strap accessory, so users can secure or attach it to different objects. This allows them to also stick it to the wall in case influencers need to make a quick video for their followers. Because of the dual hinges, the card-sized device can double as a dashboard camera and allow the users to record their drive and monitor road accidents. So far, the company says that the device offers a dual-screen mode.

When the user folds the first half, they can use the two screens for different apps or tabs. The company has yet to share whether it comes with multi-screen mode, meaning the third foldable screen can project a different app. The dual hinges also let users turn the foldable and portable smartphone into its own tripod for taking rear images or even selfies. The issue of creases because of the two hinges on the front screen comes up, and Infinix may set things straight for when they plan to unveil the prototype of the foldable and portable smartphone.

new smartphone designs ahead of MWC 2025

Ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, which runs between March 3rd and 6th, we look back at the recent smartphone designs that have added even more modern features. Some of the models have liquid metal thermal conductivity as well as an active fan to keep the devices from overheating.

These personal gadgets have multiple foldable screens too, allowing users to choose between single- and double-display modes. There’s also a retractable camera, just like in the old days, and a series of backlights that blink for every notification received. These features may show up during the MWC 2025 in Barcelona, even further upgrades for the modern users. In the meantime, we explore these new smartphone designs before the MWC 2025 begins.

NOTHING PHONE 2A PLUS

The Glyph lights behind the Nothing Phone 2a Plus blink in patterns whenever the user receives notifications. The brand says that all preset Nothing ringtones and notification sound effects have their own special design Glyph patterns. The way the light flashes also follows the rhythm of the phone’s vibrations and sound effects. The brand also says that they use a combination of nanocoating, multi-layer printing techniques, and coating materials to unearth the ‘metallic’ look of the device, features that can come up during MWC 2025.

APPLE IPHONE 16E

Apple releases the iPhone 16e with an action button that can unlock and lock cars, identify objects, and even translate and transcribe recordings on site. Ahead of the MWC 2025, part of its modern smartphone designs is the 2-in-1 camera system. This means that the 2x Telephoto lens is integrated into its 48MP one. The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology also has an edge-to-edge design. This feature is ideal for when the user watches HDR videos, plays games, and reads on their device outdoors.

GOOGLE PIXEL 9 FOLD

Google says that for the Pixel 9 Fold, the design team reinvents the hinge. It’s now fluid friction, made of multi-alloy steel with an aluminum alloy-covered hinge. It snaps shut and opens fully flat with a snap, too. Unlike the foldable modern smartphone designs, the Google Pixel 9 Fold expands horizontally. It has a 6.3-inch display size when used in single-screen mode and an 8-inch screen when unfolded. The design team, who will be presenting at MWC 2025, also creates a double-stacked camera bar positioned in the top left corner.

MOTOROLA RAZR 50 ultra

Ahead of MWC 2025, Motorola gives its Razr 50 Ultra a Peach Fuzz upgrade, which is the 2025 Pantone Color of the Year. Aside from that, the hinge of the device lets the user angle their phone to 90 degrees and record videos as if they were holding a camcorder from the past. It’s a nostalgic feature on their list of modern smartphone designs. When the user opens it to a V position, they can flip the smartphone and take pictures without the hinge snapping the device close. When folded, it fits in the front pockets, unlike the now-conventional, big-screened phones.

SAMSUNG GALAXY Z FLIP6

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 also folds vertically and fits in front pockets, taking up less space. Looking at its exterior, the two cameras and flash don’t obstruct the display. Ahead of MWC 2025, the design team uses its Galaxy AI on the recent model as part of its new smartphone designs. This artificial intelligence system lets the device monitor the health and stress levels of the users when paired with the Galaxy Ring and Watch7. The system also lets Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 users transcribe and translate phone calls and interviews.

REDMAGIC 10 PRO

There are a number of modern smartphone designs around the Redmagic 10 Pro, ahead of MWC 2025. It uses liquid metal thermal conductivity to keep the device from heating up. The design team also installs an active fan with noise reduction. It serves as a second hand to the liquid metal when it comes to bringing the device’s heat down, especially during marathon gaming sessions. The Redmagic 10 Pro has an almost bezel-less expansive screen, unlike other modern smartphone designs, as well as a 144Hz refresh rate system.
