‘Future Primitive’ design in california’s high desert

The HATA Dome stands quietly at the edge of California‘s Sawtooth Mountains, its curved form emerging from the rocky terrain like a relic of both past and future. Designed and built by Anastasiya Dudik — a self-taught designer without formal architectural training — the structure is a gesture toward resilience, intuition, and an architecture that grows out of landscape and circumstance rather than trend.

Embracing what Dudik calls a ‘future primitive’ sensibility, the architecture draws from ancestral forms and elemental materials to meet contemporary environmental demands. The dome’s form is a performative design decision. The thermal mass moderates temperature, its sealed envelope resists fire and earthquakes with a gesture that echoes the earth’s own curves. Shotcrete over rebar, wrapped in foam insulation, and finished in stucco, the structure evokes both the logic of survival and the poetry of shelter. The HATA Dome is available for rent as a holiday retreat through Airbnb — find the listing here.

hata dome: A Poetic Reframing of Brutalism

In California’s High Desert, the HATA Dome speaks a language of concrete, but softly. While its exterior silhouette nods to Brutalism and the monolithic legacy of Soviet-era design, Anastasiya Dudik reinterprets these precedents with empathy. The shell encloses a space of refuge, not imposition. Sixteen-foot ceilings soar, but the acoustics remain hushed. Natural light slides across plaster walls. Edges soften into curves. Even the furnishings, carved from boulders and integrated into the interior architecture, follow the same continuous gesture.

The dome’s form dissolves the familiar architectural boundaries of floor, wall, and object. Inside, there is no separation between the landscape and the home. It is a continuum of matter and space. The built-in furniture seems to rise organically from the ground. Niches emerge like eroded pockets. Even the circular saltwater pool outside mirrors the shape of the dome, drawing the eye back to the silhouette that anchors this sculptural oasis in the desert expanse.

Designer Anastasiya Dudik executed every aspect of the project — from structural engineering and material procurement to interior detailing — without a studio, a contractor, or a team. It’s a solitary vision made real, uncompromised by committee or convention. Her process, like the dome itself, reflects resilience: the capacity to adapt, endure, and self-define.

living within the elements

The HATA Dome stands as a model of self-reliance in California. The structure’s thick concrete walls regulate internal temperatures, reducing dependence on artificial heating or cooling. With solar-ready systems, fire resistance, and durability against earthquakes and wind, it reimagines sustainability not as add-on, but as embedded logic. Its survivalist DNA does not exclude beauty. Instead, it makes room for it.

A familiar material palette of concrete, steel, stone is re-contextualized through personal memory. Dudik, who grew up surrounded by concrete structures in Ukraine, infuses the dome with a different emotional register. Where Brutalism once communicated austerity or control, here it becomes something protective and personal. A concrete dome becomes a kind of body that is resilient, curved, and embracing. Overall, the space invites a slowing down of time. From the acoustic hush to the careful modulation of light, the project encourages stillness and presence.

Stay inside shrek’s swamp with airbnb

Fans of the famous ogre can now stay inside a real-life recreated Shrek’s Swamp since it is finally listed on Airbnb. The accommodation is nestled inside a secluded forest in the Scottish Highlands, and a few lucky guests can request – again, request – to book Shrek’s Swamp beginning October 13th at 6 p.m. BST. The details of Shrek’s home in the movie are thoroughly captured in the Swamp, from the rustic interiors and clever use of forestry on the outside down to the iconic outhouse and livable set designs.

Shrek’s Swamp on Airbnb takes the meaning of a ‘treehouse’ to the next level. Where traditional treehouse designs have the architecture above the tree, Shrek’s Swamp carries the whole tree on its roof, as seen in the exterior. The tree extends even inside where its branches and trunk crawl along the walls of the accommodation. The makeshift tree enables the ogre and movie fans to feel and embody the character’s lifestyle, and they should wait until they step inside where the detailed interiors fully invoke the movie’s scenography.

£0 a night for the ‘brogres’ travelers?

First off, Donkey is waiting at the entrance, sitting on a chair. He is swamp-sitting for Shrek and making sure that the Airbnb accommodation is well-kept. With Donkey in charge of Shrek’s Swamp, guests will have the chance to live their versions of the layered ogre life for two nights (excluding the torches, pitchforks, and intrusive Duloc Knights unless the guests make their own). Guests just have to know that the bathroom is located 20 meters from the main living area in a standalone facility.

During their stay, guests can sleep at night with earwax candlelight on and kick their feet up with a parfait (yes, there is a parfait). A fireplace can warm up their cool nights as they exchange stories while sitting in the dining room with furniture made of wood. Airbnb says that for £0 a night – a nod to the priceless refuge Shrek’s Swamp has provided fairytale creatures of all kinds – ‘brogres’ will be able to request to book a two-night stay for up to three guests between October 27th and 29th, 2023. It seems that Airbnb is running a first-come-first-served system, so eager fans may need to keep an eye out for its slot opening!

Brasília, a capital city perhaps most well known for its heritage of modernist architecture, serves as the backdrop for the house. The dialogue between the modern cityscape and the adjacent natural environment infuses the project with a distinctive character. The project at once coexists with its surroundings and and creates an oasis of tranquility outside of the fast pace of the city. Discover the space, available for rent on Airbnb!

alecrim house: a holiday home in the lavender fields

Alan Chu Arquitectura’s inspiration for the Alecrim House transformation originated from a heartfelt desire to integrate the residences with the natural world. The project was born out of the vision of a couple who had lovingly nurtured the land for over two decades, acting as stewards of the environment. Their meticulous efforts in tree planting and the creation of a sprawling lavender field laid the foundation for the house’s design, which mirrors their deep connection with nature.

The lavender field, a prominent landscape feature, is more than just a scenic vista — it serves as a precious resource for the proprietors’ line of organic products. This sustainable approach to raw materials underscores the architects‘ commitment to nature, illustrating how architecture can seamlessly integrate with economic sustainability, environmental consciousness, and human comfort.

alan chu architects’ sunlit oasis

Within this contextual tapestry outside Brasília, the Alecrim House was conceived as a sanctuary of relaxation and deceleration. The architects led by Alan Chu employed the interplay of natural light and a neutral color palette to infuse the interior spaces with a soothing ambience. The design ethos revolves around the concept of eliminating distractions, allowing guests to be fully present in the moment.

The Alecrim House embodies the owners’ philosophy of ‘slow’ living. Through its humble design and meticulous attention to detail, the hotel dwelling extends an invitation to visitors to experience a more deliberate and mindful way of life. By limiting distractions and focusing on essentials, the architecture itself encourages guests to embrace the present moment and savor the art of living at a leisurely pace.

drawing from the pre-colonial heritage of mérida

In Mérida, a Mexican city known for its limestone colonial architecture and a rich Mayan legacy, architect Ludwig Godefroy designs this Casa Dzul. Paying homage to the region’s ancient temples, the structure takes shape with a modern, brutalist style which works to capture the essence of Mayan heritage with its staggered, exposed concrete forms. Thus, it evokes a temple ruin emerging from the lush Yucatán jungle. This home is available to rent through Airbnb, offering travelers a chance to experience the historic design influence translated through a contemporary lens.

ludwig godefroy evokes a temple ruin

The team led by Ludwig Godefroy sites its Casa Dzul in Mérida, which is nicknamed ‘The White City’ for its immaculately white-washed buildings, many of which use stone sourced directly from Mayan ruins. With its colonial urban fabric, the Yucatán capital sets the stage for a new architecture that stands in playful opposition to its surroundings. Casa Dzul gracefully disrupts the city’s traditional aesthetic by embracing the allure of cast concrete and harmoniously enveloping itself in lush greenery. Godefroy’s vision weaves together the villa’s concrete volumes and vibrant vegetation, an artistic reinterpretation of Mérida’s famed limestone structures and Mayan heritage.

a retreat for travelers and Remote Workers

Ludwig Godefroy’s Casa Dzul thoughtfully caters to the ‘digital nomads’ which have lately flocked to such destinations in Mexico. A designated workspace and a common area invite guests to stay productive while enjoying the serenity of their surroundings. The villa’s private swimming pool dramatically cuts through the dwelling’s sculptural concrete volumes. Two airy bedrooms are light by clerestory windows carved into the double-height concrete. An abundance of natural light floods the space, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Pivoting steel-frame glass doors open the interior out toward a private courtyard, linking the lush surroundings with the understated, minimalist interior.

Where Tropical Brutalism Meets mexican Heritage

The breezy outdoor courtyard and swimming pool act as the focal point of Ludwig Godefroy-designed Casa Dzul. Amidst the rugged and austere concrete, splashes of vivid color paint the scenery with blue skies overhead while towering trees and swaying fronds infuse a bucolic accent to the garden walls. Throughout the space, curated moments of discovery await guests, from the captivating rock garden to clusters of succulents and palms, all offering unique perspectives through the geometries of the house. Meanwhile, the kitchen showcases the skillful blend of tropical brutalism and cultural heritage. Cast concrete surfaces and built-ins coalesce with walls of rusticated boulder, carefully hand-shaped from stone as a nod to the heritage of the area.

Dreamy Tiny House by Summerwood offers a rustic getaway

Nestled in the natural setting of Nashville‘s forested area, Dreamy Tiny House in Woods is a cabin by Summerwood that showcases a blend of old charm and contemporary comforts. The owners, Rebecca and her husband, sharing a passion for rustic getaways embark on a journey to transform their dream homestay into a successful Airbnb venture. In collaboration with Summerwood, a renowned provider of high-quality cabin kits that follows a design principle of meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, the couple opts for a small wooden cottage. After deciding to rent a portion of their home for additional income, Airbnb emerges as the ideal platform. The tiny house in the woods has become one of the most sought-after vacation destinations in the country.

the cabin sets up an inviting cottage-style interior

The cabin exudes a fairytale-like charm, with its curved door and inviting cottage-style interior. Cleverly maximizing every inch of space, the tiny house features a well-appointed kitchenette, a lofted queen bed, a full bathroom complete with a claw-foot tub, and an outdoor garden area with chickens. The design fuses old and new features skillfully woven throughout the space, as repurposed vintage cabinets adorn the kitchen alongside modern appliances and the convenience of air conditioning. With comfortable accommodations for up to four people, the house arranges a bed and a convertible futon. Rebecca with the assistance of Summerwood, friends, and family, constructs this dreamy woodland getaway.

Ken invites you to Barbie’s newly-renovated Malibu DreamHouse

In celebration of the highly anticipated Barbie movie, the iconic Malibu DreamHouse has undergone an all-pink makeover and is now back on Airbnb. While the fan-favorite doll is out busy promoting her film, Ken will play host to two lucky guests who will have the exclusive opportunity to stay in this iconic property on July 21 and July 22, 2023. The DreamHouse has been tailored to reflect Ken’s personal style and interests, now boasting rollerblades, cowboy boots, and a garden grill. Don’t worry, though—Barbie’s signature hot pink still adorns the toy-inspired house, ensuring her presence is felt throughout the space.

experiencing the ‘kendom’ through airbnb

Visitors to the DreamHouse will get the chance to enjoy the sunny, oceanfront mansion and its panoramic views that set the stage for Ken’s personally-designed home, decorated with everything he loves. Fans will stay in Ken’s personal bedroom during two exclusive one-night stays. Here’s the best part: all stays are completely free of charge. As the Airbnb notes, Ken couldn’t quite figure out how to put a price on Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse. ‘After all, Ken’s thing is beach, not math,’ the website mentions.

While in the DreamHouse, guests will have the opportunity to step into Ken’s wardrobe to find their best beach fit, channel their inner cowboy, and learn a line dance on the outdoor disco dance floor, or sunbathe by the infinity pool. Visitors will also be able to take home a piece of the ‘Kendom’: their very own set of yellow-and-pink Impala skates and surfboards.
