tokyo sees the opening of ‘100 colors no.53’

‘100 colors no.53,’ the latest installment in Emmanuelle Moureaux’s ongoing ‘100 colors path’ series, has opened at Takanawa Gateway City in Tokyo. Composed of 2,400 vertical lines, each rendered in one of 100 precisely selected colors, the work is both a spatial structure and a temporal map, charting a century’s worth of imagined futures.

The piece is installed in the newly developed Gateway Park by East Japan Railway Company, and marks the launch of Takanawa Gateway City, an urban complex built around a central transport hub in Minato Ward. As the first public installation unveiled with the complex’s debut, ‘100 colors path’ sets the tone for a neighborhood defined by openness and movement. ‘100 colors no. 53’ will be open to the public until July 21st, 2025.

emmanuelle moureaux’s map of Color and Time

While Emmanuelle Moureaux’s ‘100 colors no.53,’ reads as a shifting gradient from across the Tokyo plaza, its internal logic is revealed up close as an accumulation of numbers layered within a calibrated spectrum. This way, the Tokyo-based French architect‘s characteristic use of color is an architectural material rather than surface treatment. Each line is inscribed with a year, beginning in 2025 and continuing sequentially through 2124.

The structural rhythm of the work is defined by uniform spacing and repetition. Lines are suspended vertically to create a passage that is simultaneously transparent and immersive. The numbers printed on the lines come in and out of view as visitors move through the piece, a kinetic effect heightened by the optical interference patterns of overlapping colors.

a pathway carved through immersive color

At the heart of Tokyo’s ‘100 colors path’ installation is a central corridor which cuts through the colored grid. Emmanuelle Moureaux carves this passage to invite entry, allowing visitors to become momentarily absorbed in the spectrum of time. As people walk through the corridor, the visual rhythm shifts with their movement. It is a simple gesture, but one that transforms the installation from an object to inhabit into an environment to experience.

Inside, the work offers a tactile proximity to each color and year. The vertical density flattens at certain angles and deepens at others, underscoring the relationship between time and space in architectural perception. The effect is neither theatrical nor didactic — it is precise, open-ended, and responsive to movement.

the installation consists of 2,400 vertical lines arranged in 100 precisely selected colors

Beyond the park installation, the concept of ‘100 colors path’ has been extended throughout the station district. Moureaux designed related graphics for both north and south ticket gates of Takanawa Gateway Station, as well as the surrounding street flags. A complementary augmented reality experience titled 100 colors city allows visitors to engage with the installation digitally, activating the concept through smartphone interaction.

During the exhibition period, a public workshop invited participants to search for color in their everyday surroundings — an approach that reinforces the project’s central theme of color as a framework for observation and time. This alignment between physical installation and public programming strengthens the architectural relevance of the work in its urban setting.

a central corridor invites visitors to walk through the immersive color field

Moureaux’s 100 colors path continues her exploration of how color can be used to shape physical space and collective imagination. The numbering of each line, paired with a clear chronological arc, gives structure to what could otherwise be a purely aesthetic field. This linking of color and time brings a conceptual framework that is visually inviting, but also conceptually complex.

The installation references both the future and the present. The decision to begin during Takanawa Gateway City’s inaugural year of 2025 grounds the piece in its immediate context. Meanwhile, the choice to extend one hundred years forward transforms the project into a durational meditation on memory and urban growth.

mirage wraps google headquarters in an array of overlapping 0s

Emmanuelle Moureaux enlivens Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, with a sculptural series of vibrant entrance points. Titled MIRAGE, the large-scale installation transforms the Googleplex with a mesmerizing spectrum of overlapping zeros in 100 different colors that seemingly float in a three-dimensional grid. 60 meters long, the three sculptural entrances manifest a universe of boundless possibilities, inspired by the concept of Googolplex — the nearly incomprehensible mathematical number that inspired the tech giant’s name.

The calculated orientations of the rings, alluding to zeros, also generate various layers of depth, giving the impression of floating numerals that appear and disappear depending on the vantage point. The void within each zero serves as a conceptual canvas, signifying the birth of new ideas from emptiness.

Emmanuelle Moureaux continues her 100 colors series

The Tokyo-based architect, artist, and designer known for her vibrant use of color, continues her ongoing ‘100 colors’ installation series. With MIRAGE, Emmanuelle Moureaux conceives a composition that creates an ever-shifting interplay of form and perspective as visitors approach and move around the site. Each entrance was consciously designed to respond to its immediate environment, ensuring a unique experience from every angle.

During the day, the installation bathes the campus in a vibrant cascade of color, enhancing the architectural landscape with its rhythmic patterns. At night, the work takes on a new character, illuminated in a way that makes the colors appear to float independently in the darkness, creating a surreal mirage-like effect. Beyond its aesthetic intervention, Emmanuelle Moureaux integrates an interactive and immersive experience, encouraging passersby to move around and engage with the site through a different layer.

The sculptural entrances, in this way, act as thresholds that bridge the physical and digital realms, mirroring Google’s role as a gateway to discovery. Moureaux emphasizes the universal, borderless nature of color, positioning it as a symbol of diversity, equality, and unity. ‘Color is universal, borderless, and infinite,’ Emmanuelle Moureaux states. ‘The title, MIRAGE, expresses the hope that a colorful mirage will rise in the hearts of those who see this work, sublimate into a dream emitting a magnificent light, and eventually be realized in the real world.’

timeline by emmanuelle moureaux emerges in lumière, paris

French artist Emmanuelle Moureaux expands her 100 colors series with TIMELINE, a site-specific installation locatedinside Lumière, the largest private office building in Paris on the 12th arrondissement, at the heart of the Bercy business district. The building has seven upper floors divided into two wings linked by an impressive atrium. Complementing the architecture’s unique morphology, Moureaux has introduced this multicolored artwork as a symbol of the diversity of people and moments of life. TIMELINE is the artist’s first permanent project from her 100 colors series.

100 colors and 3,200 digits turn into an abstract ray of light

Inspired by the sky and the glass roof of the atrium, TIMELINE by Emmanuelle Moureaux (see more here) is an abstract visualization of a beam of light passing through the building in 100 shades of colors. These colors represent 3,200 digits, each denoting a year. At the bottom, Moureaux begins with 2023 and 2024; the years stack up one by one toward the sky, reaching 18 meters in height. The present is expressed in white, while future years are expressed in colors. This chromatic gradation from the bottom emphasizes the flow of time. Moreover, all numbers face the lounge area of the office building and the glass facade on the other side. They’re also fixed to prevent them from turning, thus appearing like a natural line of light, even when viewed from a distance.

TIMELINE by Emmanuelle Moureaux

Living in Tokyo since 1996, Emmanuelle Moureaux is inspired by the complex and evolving layers and colors of the Japanese city and its traditional spatial elements, like sliding screens. With that, she has created the concept of ‘shikiri,’ which literally means ‘dividing (creating) space with colors.’ Using colors as her signature, her artworks extend to several projects, including architectural design for Sugamo Shinkin Bank, art installations for UNIQLO and ISSEY MIYAKE, 100 colors’ art installation series, and Forest of Numbers at The National Art Center, Tokyo.

Emmanuelle Moureaux’s ‘100 colors butterflies’ takes center stage at Lancôme’s The Art of Absolue exhibition in Shanghai, themed Perpetual, Beyond Time. No.48 in Moureaux’s ongoing 100 colors series, which started in 2013, the installation aims to evoke emotions through vibrant hues. The piece features 40,000 artificial butterflies adorning a circular volume, creating an immersive experience for visitors. Serving as an abstract representation of beauty and eternity, the display aligns with the philosophy of the beauty brand and its collection. As attendees walk through a path of white butterflies, they are guided to the heart of the artwork, an array of over 100 butterflies in a multitude of shades, varying from yellow, to red, green and blue, and soaring over 10 meters high.

DRAWING FROM THE VIBRANT STREETS OF TOKYO

The French architect, artist, and designer, who has been based in Tokyo since 1996, draws inspiration from the vibrant layers of the Japanese city. Renowned for her unique design approach, termed ‘shikiri,’ Emmanuelle Moureaux focuses on creating spatial experiences through the intricate use of colors. Reflecting on her initial impressions upon arriving in Tokyo, Moureaux describes:I was fully fascinated by the colors overflowing on the street. In that very moment, my mind decided to move to Japan. Overwhelming number of store signs, flying electrical cables, and flashes of blue sky framed by various volumes of buildings, created three dimensional ‘layers’ in the city.’ Through her 100 colors series, she aims to raise awareness about the colors that surround us by exploring different shades in various environments. This series continues to travel globally, inviting viewers to engage with the sensory experience it offers.

the infinite 100 colors no.50 by emmanuelle moureaux

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of its brand icon, the Serpenti, Italian fashion house Bulgari has initiated a series of creative collaborations with three contemporary artists from around the world, including Tokoy-based French artist Emmanuelle Moureaux. These collaborations translate into an immersive exhibition titled Bulgari Serpenti 75 Years of Infinite Tales at the Jing Harajuku venue in Tokyo. Moureaux’s intervention takes center stage, marking the 50th of her 100-color installations series with what seems to be an infinite chromatic corridor evoking the allure of the Serpenti, a symbol of eternity. ‘The space is designed to evoke emotion by inviting visitors into an infinite world where colors seem to continue forever, following a long and narrow endless path,’ shares the artist.

Stepping into a narrow path at the Bulgari Serpenti exhibition, the infinite colors emerge, represented by 347,100 Roman numerals in 100 shades of color. Emmanuelle Moureaux (see more here) chose this special motif as respect to the brand’s roots in Rome, using 100 large transparent acrylic panels, regularly aligned to a depth of approximately 16 meters. These panels are cut out in the middle for visitors to comfortably walk inside the installation, bathing themselves in a chroma of numbers. With each acrylic layer, the numbers and shade progress, from 1 to 100, and from one color gradient to the next. ‘Roman numerals, consisting of five simple symbols (I, V, X, L, C), are aligned perfectly on a three-dimensional grid, creating an infinity of numbers,’ explains Moureaux.

Emmanuelle Moureaux‘s 100 colors no.42 is on view along the 150-meter-long shopping street at DOGO ONSEN, the oldest hot spring in Japan. Revealed as part of DOGO ART 2023 festival, showcasing the works of various artists to energize and add colors to the spring, the symbolic installation includes the Tokoy-based French artist’s signature use of a 100-shade palette, transforming the busy shopping strip into a colorful and dynamic passage. The stretch of space connects to the famous Dogo Onsen Main Building, inviting more people to immerse themselves in the ephemeral rainbow suspending above them.

Approaching the entrance of the Dogo Shopping Street, a floating volume of 100 colors appears behind the famous Dogo signage. Emmanuelle Moureaux (see more here) composed this section as a three-meter cube of masking tape made of traditional Japanese Washi paper, especially created for the artist’s unique 100-shade palette. Spanning only 15 millimeters wide, each washi paper strip is perflectly placed next to the other, forming a mezmerizing ensemble that gently sways in the wind. ‘The essence of 100 colors is condensed at the entrance, like a gateway to a world of 100 colors to come,’ shares Moureaux.

Stepping into the Arcade, the ceiling reveals more floating colored strips — specifically, 20280 thin lines of masking tapes formed by repetitive layers of curtain of colors, creating an immersive experience. Emmanuelle Moureaux used the same masking tape as the one for the floating entrance volume. Each strip is 15 millimeters wide and approximately 2 meters long. The journey begins with a layer of white which gradually shifts, layer by layer, forming a total of 101 layers that keep stretching across the 150-meter-long Dogo shopping street. The colors capture light from the arcade ceiling while picking up on the swaying movement of a gentle breeze. Between light, people, and wind, Emmanuelle Moureaux’s 100 colors no.42 changes expression depending on time, weather, and day.

100 colors no.43 ‘memory’ by emmanuelle moureaux

French artist Emmanuelle Moureaux continues her fascinating exploration of the chromatic spectrum with 100 Colors no.43 ‘Memory’ — a rainbow-inspired installation commissioned to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the opening of Roppongi Hills, a famous building complex located in the heart of Tokyo’s Roppongi district. At the foot of the Mori Tower, where people are busy coming and going, Moureaux’s layered artwork creates ‘an installation that traces memories,’ she writes. As part of Roppongi Art Night 2023, the installation lights up at night, creating a whole new atmosphere.

all images © Daisuke Shima

Composed of small numbers that spell out years, overlapping in 100 colors layers — the deeper the layer, the older the year — Emmanuelle Moureaux’s artwork reflects an abstract representation of layers that make up our ‘memory’. Precisely, the artist engraved 201,552 numbers in 100 shades of colors, written on 51 large transparent acrylic panels, regularly aligned to a depth of 12,5 meters. These small numbers depict the last 20 years since the opening of Roppongi Hills in 2003. The front layer, evoking the present (2023), stands out in its white tone, while the other 50 layers in 100 colors gradations express the flow of past time.

Perfectly aligned in three-dimensional grids, numbers are written so that they overlap exactly on both sides of each layer, creating staggering overlapping effects. It is a flow of floating numbers and colors that builds a complex depth and density, creating three-dimensional layers of colorful memory. Depending on the angle of view, the overlap between the numbers and the colors reflected in the eye changes, creating the sensation of entering into various layers of memory,’ shares the artist.

100 colors no.43 ‘memory’ is part of Emmanuelle Moureaux’s ‘100 colors’ installation series, which launched in 2013 as an ode to the overflowing ‘colors’ she witnessed in Tokyo during her 1995 trip. This emotional memory ultimately translated to a series of installations that offer people the opportunity to see, touch, and feel colors with their senses and become more conscious of their daily presence around them. In ‘100 colors’, the chromatic spectrum is explored in various forms depending on the environment to maximize the experience of those 100 hues being absorbed, mentally and emotionally, by passersby. The installation series will continue to travel around the world.

A new installation by Emmanuelle Moureaux, dubbed ‘100 colors no.37,’ is suspended among the atrium of the iconic Oslo Public Library ‘Deichman Bjørvika’ (see designboom’s coverage here), which had opened in 2020, with a architecture by Norwegian firms Atelier Oslo and Lundhagem. The installation is composed of ten thousand alphabet letters — from A to Z, including Norwegian special letters — in one hundred shades of colors.

Each piece is positioned at random and is aligned along a three dimensional grid, taking shape as an abstract representation of a book floating in the space. The colorful letters have each been meticulously cut, and are together illuminated by the natural sunlight which floods the space, creating infinite expressions which shift with the viewer’s perspective.

Hovering within the lofty atrium between the third and fifth floor, Emmanuelle Moureaux’s ‘100 colors no.37′ makes its presence known across each level of the library. The collection of letters and their one hundred colors are crafted together with subtly shifting tones, intended to be enjoyed as if the viewer were reading a book line by line. The artist, who has lived in tokyo for nearly thirty years, notes: ‘Walking around the multicolored cloud of letters is both a magic and amazing feeling. Two girls and a cat got lost in the letters, adding playfulness to the installation.’

the thirty-seventh iteration of the ‘100 colors’ series

The project marks the latest edition of Emmanuelle Moureaux’s larger ‘100 colors’ installation series. The endeavor began in 2013, and now includes thirty-seven unique works which create ethereal space through the use of one hundred shades of colors. wishes to give emotions through colors as she felt from seeing overflowing ‘colors’ in Tokyo when she first visited in 1995. She also wishes to give opportunities for people to see, touch and feel colors with their senses to become more conscious of colors that exist around them.

In ‘100 colors,’ colors are explored in various forms depending on the environment, to maximize the beauty of colors. 100 colors entering the body with a glance triggers a physical response to engage with the sensation of colors. The installation series will continue to travel around the world.

Emmanuelle Moureaux illustrates the early influences of the installation series:When I first arrived in Tokyo, I was fully fascinated by the colors overflowing on the street. In that very moment, my mind decided to move to Japan. Overwhelming number of store signs, flying electrical cables, and flashes of blue sky framed by various volumes of buildings, created three dimensional ‘layers’ in the city. The flood of various colors pervaded the street built up a complex depth and intensity in the space.

These indelible experiences of colors and layers in Tokyo were the inspiration and essence of my design concept of ‘shikiri,’ which means dividing (creating) space with colors. Valuing the emotion inspired from Tokyo, I want to show the beauty of colors to the fullest extent. I also wish to share the feeling of being surrounded by overflowing colors by exhibiting 100 colors, here in the middle of Tokyo. Please come and find your favorite color.’

an immersion of layered lines and overlapping colors

for the installation, emmanuelle moureaux decided to use the most familiar masking tape with a width of 15 mm. the tape was specially created for the project in the artist’s unique colorway which consists of 100 different tones. the piece was composed of thousands of thin lines, regularly layered vertically and diagonally, creating an immersive colorful space. visitors can walk through a cut-out tunnel to experience the color gradation and its overlapping effects — the various shades and lines overlap and change depending on the viewing angle, creating a rainbow moiré of various expressions. walking through this mesmerizing path, made up of a total of 28 km length masking tape, people forgot time and enjoyed colors with their entire body.

the title of the sculpture gives a clue to the concept behind it, as ‘mirai’ translates to ‘the future’ in japanese. using 100 different shades of colors, moureaux visualizes the next 100 years to come. charting the future from 2020 to 2119, each year is given its own distinguishing hue: from pale purple to fiery orange.

standing at 4 meters in height, the structure of the sculpture provides a big enough gap in between the years to allow small children to interact with the piece. furthermore, when looking inside the body of the sculpture, passersby will notice that the colorful future is in fact supported structurally by the past, which is represented by white numbers. ‘mirai’ is on display in green springs at the tachikawa stage garden entrance plaza.

‘100 years condensed in mirai
to welcome a lot of dreams
the city will change as people change
2020 will become the past
dreams overlapping with years
creating an infinity of colors
dreams condensed in condensed 100 years
smile and imagine
colorful future’
